The road to Wrestlemania 35 officially starts this weekend with the Royal Rumble. One of the company’s major 4 PPV events and the one that sets the table for the monster show in April. This year’s show might be one of the most important in a long time. The professional wrestling landscape is changing right before our very eyes for the better. There are more programs to watch and more opportunities for performers. For the first time in a long time the market leader had to take notice.
Looks like John Cena and Roman Reigns both will miss the big show this year. That means opportunity for someone else. Who is the next man up? The WWE has been in search of that next star of the future and still hasn’t found their way yet. Part of the reason is they don’t listen to the fans enough and then when they do push its too hard at the wrong times. A lot of that hasn’t really mattered over the past few years because there haven’t been too many reasonable alternatives to the product.
With the launch of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), the growth of New Japan and Ring of Honor the wrestling landscape is as healthy as its ever been. One advantage the WWE had was their Women’s division but now Women of Wrestling (WOW) has national distribution with AXS TV there is a high production value alternative there too. Now I am not ringing the fire alarm for the WWE but they may want to take notice before they end up in a Monday Night War of some sorts.
Now it’s time to listen to the fans and build a monster Wrestlemania to further establish your dominance on the industry. None of these other organizations take them off the mountain right away but they can take eyes away from the product. We will see how this Rumble will shape the future.
