This Saturday the WWE will be holding a pay per view like event at Madison Square Garden that will feature a main event with Brock Lesnar versus The Big Show. Brock does not do a lot of shows under his current contract so anytime we see the Beast it’s an event. The same cannot be said about his opponent in this match. In what should be one of the company’s biggest attractions, the giant has been marginalized to regular character on the roster.
As a kid I grew up watching Andre The Giant and that is the only long term actual Giant that I can compare Show to. Anytime Andre was on the television it was event and it never lost its magic. To be fair to Big Show, Andre did not have to help a company fill 5 hours of television time each week and was not a part of a bitter ratings feud between 2 major companies. The start to ruining some of Big Show’s luster started in WCW when they couldn’t figure out how to use him either.
As of late the Big Show has been on a small win streak to build up the idea he is going to have a chance to beat Lesnar. We all know that is not going to happen and it can’t undo the damage of weeks of making the big man look weak prior to this moment. After not being able to stop mid card talent like Ryback why would I believe he has a chance against the most legit superstar of a generation? In using the big man as a prop to get others over, the WWE has kind taken the luster off the achievement of what a rare accomplishment it should be to take down a 7 foot 500 pound monster.
I can’t actually think of a feud that the Big Show has come out on top of in the last 10 years. The only other supposed unstoppable force to be used in similar way is Mark Henry. Being the “World Strongest Man” hasn’t led to a lot wins for him either lately. The WWE doesn’t even try to hide from how they have buried their Giant with a list of the top 5 surprising stars who have beating the show on their site. The funny thing is that there are names like Carlito and Chuck Palumbo on this list. Now how is that going to sell the idea that he is going to have a chance against a star like Lesnar?
