Today we found out that one of the most beloved icons of the wrestling business is one of the worst humans around. We can officially mark July 24th, 2015 the day that Hulkamania died. Now don’t get me wrong I never thought that was an angel. The man who told us to be big and strong like him all we need to do was train, say our prayers and take our vitamins was doing steroids. That being said that never sets you for the idea that he would hate your guts because the color of your skin.
Just in case you were living under a rock today there is some evidence that surfaced of audio of Hulk Hogan going on a racist tirade. Now early on like most people I wanted to wait to see what was going to come out this. Sometime the media tends to blow things out of proportion but the small portion that was leaked by the National Enquirer and Radar Online are much worse than most fans expected. The WWE has never had a stellar reputation with how they handled race but nothing offensive has ever been presented to wrestling fans.
This morning when the WWE scrubbed all knowledge of Hogan’s existence from their website prior to the stories dropping fans knew something major was wrong. The word was it was something racist and people remembered an interview he on Sirus XM and figured it might have been that but had been out for over 3 years. What hit the internet was way worse. Apparently the Hulkster has an issue with his daughters dating choices. Here is what was said on the tape…
“I don’t know if Brooke was f*cking the black guy’s son,” Hulk raved, the sources add.
“I mean, I don’t have double standards. I mean, I am a racist, to a point, f*cking n*ggers. But then when it comes to nice people and sh*t, and whatever.” …
According to sources, he said: “I mean, I’d rather if she was going to f*ck some n*gger, I’d rather have her marry an 8-foot-tall n*gger worth a hundred million dollars! Like a basketball player!
“I guess we’re all a little racist. Fucking n*gger.”
Earlier today Hogan released a bullshit apology for his words trying to save what’s left of his commercial value. I cannot put any stock in this man’s attempt at trying to seem sincere about trying to make amends. These comments came from such a visceral place in his soul. Best believe there is more to come. There is supposed to be a section on the conversation where Hogan refers to The Rock as a “Sambo” and “Nigger” according to the Huffington Post. Imagine that’s how he feels about a fellow colleague who happened to become the biggest movie star in the world, how does he feel about you and me.
On a personal level this hits so hard. I actually have a “Hulkamania” t-shirt that I wore from time to time. This was the wrestling superstar of my time, the guy who helped me get hooked on the business. This also shows how deep racism can run and be hidden from the world. Hogan is not sorry for what he did, he is sorry for being caught. In time where race relations is a very sensitive topic and blacks are trying to prove that our lives matter, we find out that the guy who stood next to the Junkyard Dog felt he was just another nigger.
