Earlier this week New Japan Pro Wrestling completed its annual G1 Climax tournament. With this year’s extravaganza being the longest in the company’s history lasting 19 days there was lots of good wrestling to see. Now with it all over we got a good idea how the rest of year will shape up as we lead into Wrestle Kingdom 10.
For the 2nd straight year Shinsuke Nakamura found himself in the finals of the event. In what can only be described as an instant classic and maybe one of the best matches this year Nakamura came up short once again. This time the loss came against Hiroshi Tanahashi who looks to now main event the Tokyo Dome show for the 2nd straight year.
If everything holds up it appears that we will have a rematch of last year’s Wrestle Kingdom main event. This time around Kazuchika Okada will be the champion not the challenger when they meet. This time maybe Okada can make it over the hump and prove that he can be the man. Don’t expect Nakamura to just fade off in the distance. He and AJ Styles both should be around the main event picture for some time to come.
In case you missed the action it can be seen via NJPW World site where you can watch the every match of the tournament on demand. The G1 is an incredible example of what wrestling can at the highest level.
