The Sunday the WWE has their annual summer classic. SummerSlam is the second biggest event of the year in professional wrestling only superseded by Wrestlemania. SummerSlam has developed a deep and storied history as one of the premier pay per views in wrestling. It can be seen as the official start of the new WWE year. There usually two events after Wrestlemania that tie up the loose ends from those stories. SummerSlam is usually when we embark on the new rivalries that will dominate our year.
The warm weather extravaganza has been the launching point for some legendary careers. It has become a place where men have won their first WWE or World Heavyweight titles. There have been a few legendary matches that have changed the course of wrestling history and here at Ring Time we decided to share some of our favorite breakout moments.
WWE Undisputed Championship – Brock Lesnar vs The Rock / SummerSlam 2002
This year Brock Lesnar plans on taking the WWE title from John Cena at SummerSlam. It will not be the first time he took on an icon for the biggest prize at the big event. In 2002, when Lesnar was a rookie he took on The Rock. Brock had won the King of The Ring tournament to earn his title shot against the now mega movie star. Although considered a heel Lesnar quickly won the crowd support as the cheers of “Rocky Sucks” reigned down from the crowd. Watch as Brock completes probably the most destructive first year in the WWE by going after The Peoples Champ.
WWE SummerSlam 2004 – Randy Orton Vs Chris Benoit / World Heavyweight Championship
When Evolution was put together Triple H said that Randy Orton would be “the coal that will shaped into the next diamond”. Well at SummerSlam in 2004, Orton was ready to shine and shake off the rest of that coal dust. Still a member of the Evolution faction, the 3rd generation superstar won the opportunity by winning at battle royal on RAW. Chris Benoit who recently has captured the world title from Triple H at Wrestlemania was poised to take down the up and coming Viper. Despite his best efforts they were not good enough. Randy went on to become the youngest World Champion in WWE history at that time. This was the first of was now 12 world champions for the Legend Killer.
SummerSlam 2013 – John Cena vs Daniel Bryan / WWE Championship
Last year Daniel Bryan has to be the wrestler of the year. His run to the title Wrestlemania was one of the most anticipated since Stone Cold marched to his 1st WWE Title. The legend of Daniel Bryan began against John Cena at SummerSlam 2013. With special guest referee Triple H, Bryan went on to show the world that he can hang with the best of them. This was his time with the main belt on the main show. His subsequently getting screwed by Triple H and Randy Orton after the match lead to one of the biggest fight the system stories in recent sports entertainment history.
